Chart alerts

Set an alert straight from a chart on price, an indicator value or a drawing. Know the difference between a chart alert, which only works while the chart is open, and a Tapeboard alert, which reaches you with the tab closed.

There are two kinds of alert you can set from a chart, and they behave differently. Pick the one that matches how you need to be told.

Use a chart alert for a level you are watching right now. Use a Tapeboard alert for anything you want to hear about later.

How to set a chart alert on a price

  1. Open a stock chart while signed in. The ALERTS button sits in the toolbar. On a phone it reads ALERT.
  2. Click ALERTS to open the Chart alerts panel, then create a new alert.
  3. Choose price as the source and enter the level. Choose when it should fire: crossing the level, crossing up, crossing down, above, below, or entering or leaving a range.
  4. Pick whether it checks on Bar close or on an intrabar touch. Bar close waits for the candle to finish, so a brief wick does not trigger it.
  5. Choose whether it fires once or every time, then save.

A line for the alert appears on the chart at your level. You can also right-click the chart at a price and choose Create alert for that price.

How to move an alert line

  1. Point at the alert line on the chart.
  2. Drag it up or down to the new price. It lands on a valid price for that symbol.
  3. Release. The alert now watches the new level.

How to set an alert on an indicator or a drawing

  1. To alert on an indicator, open ALERTS, create an alert and choose the indicator you have on the chart as the source, then enter the value.
  2. To alert on a drawing, right-click the drawing and choose Create drawing alert. Fibonacci and other multi-line drawings let you choose which level.
  3. Save it. The alert follows the drawing if you move it.

See Chart drawing tools for how to draw the lines.

How to get an alert when the tab is closed

  1. Click the bell (Alert) button at the top of the chart, or open the Alerts page.
  2. Choose a type: Price Above, Price Below, % Change or Volume Above, and enter the value.
  3. Save it. Tapeboard checks the alert on its own servers, so it fires without any chart open.
  4. You are told through your notification settings: in-app, email or push. The Alerts page has more alert types and per-alert delivery, including a webhook.

For push alerts on your phone, install the app first. See Install the Tapeboard app.

Good to know

  • Free accounts can keep 3 Tapeboard alerts at a time. Pro has no limit.
  • A chart alert fires with a message on the chart and a sound. If you close the tab, it cannot reach you.
  • Chart alerts are tied to the symbol and timeframe you set them on. They pause on other timeframes and resume when you come back.
  • Logged-out visitors do not get the ALERTS button.

If something doesn't work

  • I set a chart alert and never heard from it: the chart has to stay open. Move it to a Tapeboard alert if you will not be watching.
  • There is no ALERTS button: you are signed out, or on a chart that does not offer it. Sign in and open a stock chart.
  • A Tapeboard alert did not arrive by email or push: check your delivery choices under Notifications.
  • The alert did not fire on a wick: bar close waits for the candle to finish. Pick the intrabar touch option if you want wicks to count.
