Chart indicators

Add moving averages, RSI, MACD and 125+ other indicators to a chart, tune their settings, and drag the panes they sit in to the height you want.

An indicator is a calculation drawn on your chart, such as a moving average over the price or RSI in a strip below it. The chart has about 130 of them in one searchable list, grouped as Momentum, Trend, Volatility, Volume and Overlay. Popular ones include SMA, EMA, VWAP, Bollinger bands, Ichimoku, Supertrend, RSI, MACD, Stochastic, ATR and OBV. Tapeboard adds its own, such as relative volume, anchored VWAP, TTM Squeeze, Squeeze Momentum, Elder Ray and pivot points.

How to add an indicator

  1. Click INDICATORS in the chart toolbar. On a phone it reads IND.
  2. Type part of the name in Search indicators, for example rsi. Or scroll the groups.
  3. Click the indicator you want. It goes on the chart straight away and the list stays open so you can add more.
  4. Click Done to close the list.

Indicators that use the same scale as price, like moving averages, draw over the candles. Indicators with their own scale, like RSI and MACD, get their own pane under the price.

How to give panes more or less room

Every indicator that needs its own scale sits in its own pane, and so does volume. A small grip pill marks each boundary between panes.

  1. Move your pointer onto the line between two panes. A highlight line appears and the pointer changes to an up-and-down arrow.
  2. Press and drag up or down. The pane above and the pane below trade height as you move.
  3. Release to set it. Panes can shrink to a thin strip but not vanish.

How to change an indicator's settings

  1. Hover the indicator's name in the small legend at the top of its pane.
  2. Click the gear to open its settings.
  3. Change the inputs, such as the period, and the colors, line style and line width. The chart updates as you edit.

The same legend row has controls to hide the indicator, move its pane up or down, collapse or maximize the pane, and remove it.

How to hide or remove an indicator

  1. Open INDICATORS again. Everything on the chart is listed under Running studies.
  2. Click an indicator you have already added to turn it off.
  3. Or hover its legend row on the chart and use the hide or remove control.

With several indicators on the chart, the legend collapses to a single line such as Indicators 2. Click it to expand the list.

How to keep indicators the same across charts

When you have more than one chart open, an IND SYNC button appears in each chart's toolbar. With sync on, adding, removing or editing an indicator on one chart does the same on the linked charts. Click it to change to IND LOCAL and that chart keeps its own set.

Good to know

  • Crypto charts leave out open interest and seasonality, which need data crypto does not have.
  • Indicators are drawn from the bars you are looking at, so the same indicator gives different values on a 5m and a 1D chart.
  • To test a rule built from indicators on past data, use Backtest.

If something doesn't work

  • The indicator does not appear: it may be in a new pane at the bottom. Scroll the chart area or drag the dividers to make room.
  • Panes are too thin to read: drag the divider between them until the pane has the height you want.
  • You cannot find a name: search for a shorter part of it, such as macd or bollinger.
  • The list will not open: wait for the chart to finish loading, then click INDICATORS again.
